i may go there in the summer

In Austria you may get lucky depending on the hotel’s category to get satellite reception of some English speaking Channels but I don’t think you will be able to see your favorite ones.

For Italy I doubt it completely except from English speaking news channels .

Is a rail pass the best opiotion for travel in Austria? What trains can you take?

Question by laelynn: Is a rail pass the best opiotion for travel in Austria? What trains can you take?
We are traveling mostly in Austira between Veinna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Hallstatt as well as Munich and Fussen in Germany. We are doing this is 11 days and are wanting a rail pass sold online that allows you up to 10 days of unlimited travel. However I have never been there or taken a train so I am clueless as to the process. Would we just show up at the train station and show our pass? If anyone has done a pass for Austira and Germany. Any help would be great!!

Yes, train travel is highly recommended in Germany and Austria. The trains are punctual and the service is excellent. There are usually 3 types of trains depending on distance and speed – express, regional, etc. The pass will cover all travel between cities only. But within a city, say Vienna for example, you would have to buy a local transit pass to get around. Train travel is a great way to see the countryside, too.

Yes, you can purchase ahead an Austria-Germany railpass with Eurail. I did that last year and saved a lot of money. Just figure out first your travel itinerary – how many days of travelling between cities, ex. 10, then go to Eurail’s website and click on Eurail Regional Passes, click on Eurail Austria-Germany Pass, and choose how many days of travel during a 2 month period. You can purchase your passes online or over the phone. The tickets plus a train timetable will be couriered to you within 2-3 days.

smoker-friendly hotels in austria?

Question by ray a: smoker-friendly hotels in austria?
My wife and I are going to Vienna and Salzburg in May. She has been looking for hotels and says all the ones she can find are non-smoking. Can this be true in a still-civilized country like Austria? Any suggestions?

Anti-smokers need not reply. I already know what an evil, unhealthy enemy of society I am.

Salzburg:
Hotel Salzburger Hof: Website says 32 rooms of which 24 are non-smoking rooms – the others should be smokers then
Website:

http://www.en.hotel-in-salzburg.at/html/hotel/into_to_hotel.html

Hotel Neutor: They say: The majority of our rooms are non-smoking – so there also should be smokers room

http://www.salzburg-private-hotels.com/en/hotels/8-13-Schwaerzler-Hotel-Neutor/

Use the contact link on top of the “Salzburg Privat Hotels” page to ask which of those have smokers rooms.

http://www.salzburg-private-hotels.com/en/

Vienna:
Hotal am Augarten, booking portal says “Smoking rooms upon request”

http://www.austria-hotels.at/hotel-am-augarten/accommodation.html

Hotel de France: Smokin roooms available on request, state when booking

http://www.austria-hotels.at/hotel-de-france/accommodation.html

Hotel Prinz Eugen: Smoking rooms on request

http://www.austria-hotels.at/hotel-prinz-eugen/accommodation.html

Hotel Kavalier, near Schönbrunn Castle: Smoking and non-smoking rooms

http://www.austria-hotels.at/hotel-kavalier/index.html

Check with Austria Hotels if some of their other hotels also have smoking rooms

http://www.austria-hotels.at/portal/index.html

Hope it helps.

Most certainly there are more.

What is the cheapest way to get from Munich to Salzburg by train?

Answer by t_maia2000
Buy “Bayern-Ticket” at a ticket vending machine at the train station. It should be 28 EUR. Bayern-Ticket is valid the whole day and allows a group of up to 5 people to travel unlimited on regional trains (RE, RB, IRE and S trains, but not IC, EC and ICE trains) throughout Bavaria.

In order to find trains that you can use with Bayern-Ticket go to http://www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en and select “only local transport”. Note that when you travel on a weekday pick a connection that leaves Munich after 9 am.
